Федеральный налог с прогрессивными ставками, взимаемый с имущества умершего лица. Кроме того, существуют и налоги штатов: либо налог на недвижимость, либо налог на наследование. Цель налога - предотвращение концентрации богатства в руках небольшого числа семей. В качестве лазейки [tax loopholes] для неуплаты налога служат трастовые компании, управляющих имуществом на началах доверительной собственности, а также договоры дарения. Хотя существует налог на дарение, имущество на сумму в 3 тыс. долл. налогом не облагается и может быть небольшими порциями в течение ряда лет передано многим лицам без уплаты налога.
